A two year creation. My first condo in Arizona had almost no furniture for the duration of my stay because I knew it was only a temporary residence. The simplicity consequently held no distractions. I cocooned myself in this place before emerging stronger, with new perspective and bravery. That's where I made this piece.
I wasn't afraid to put experimental color down on the canvas and ruin it. The fun was despising it, and then changing it completely, over and over, until it settled into something true. Every layer is still visible in what you're looking at. Every wrong turn, every hue or shape I changed my mind about — they're all still here, having formed and influenced the resulting continuity.
The bubbles suspended in the ice were what I kept coming back to. Ideas not yet taken. Moments held perfectly still before they break through. I was in the middle of a long transition — learning what I wanted, letting go of what I didn't — and this painting reflected all of it.
When I finally finished, I felt it: there are no mistakes. Only the next layer. And becoming bold about the actions you take is the only way to crack out of the shell.
The original carries something a print cannot — the texture under your hand, the history of it becoming visible just beneath the surface. This piece was made for someone who understands that.
